Ways to Give

Why volunteer?

It’s making a difference in the world that prevents me from ever giving up.”

Deborah Meier
U.S. educator, New York Magazine

Volunteering benefits those who give of themselves as much as those who receive the kindness and compassion. Our volunteers unanimously agree that the time they spend with patients, staff and visitors awakens in them a connection to our community and our world. Indeed the difference they make inspires them to live more connected, meaningful lives. How might your life be enhanced and energized by dedicating a few hours each week to helping others?

Discover your talents

Students, retirees, homemakers and business executives are all integral members of Memorial’s gifted volunteer team. Many have reported developing new skills and uncovering hidden talents when they were assisting staff members or encouraging and comforting patients and visitors.

Form lasting friendships

What a great place to make new friends, in a caring, supportive, compassionate environment. Volunteers are invited to participate in many educational and social activities throughout the year. Friendships are built and reinforced spending quality time with like-minded people. Often friendships that begin with a common shift or assignment grow into shared outside interests and social groups.

Make a difference in people’s lives

If being a friend is the best way to have one, our dedicated and compassionate volunteers have ample opportunities to meet like-minded new friends every day they share their time, talents and energy at Memorial’s many on- and off-campus volunteer opportunities. And not only do volunteers make new friends, they enjoy a fulfillment that can only come through helping others. Every volunteer at Memorial will agree that the greatest reward for giving of themselves is the satisfaction they receive from serving the community through their work.

Pursue new interests

The Volunteer Services staff strives to provide an environment where volunteers can meet their own needs in addition to those of the organization. When volunteers feel happy and inspired, they consistently report finding new hobbies, interests and skills they never knew they had. Nothing excites our volunteer coordinators more than hearing how “fun, exciting and interesting” a volunteer assignment at Memorial turns out to be. We want our volunteers to enjoy placements that are consistent with their skills and interests while serving staff, patient and visitor needs.

Increased knowledge

Our volunteers get the opportunity to learn firsthand about health care professionals and developing technologies in the medical field every day. They are graciously invited into the lives of staff, patients and visitors, and get to participate in the delivery of quality health care to a diverse population. Some volunteers are eligible to earn service learning hours and academic credit as part of the volunteer experience.
