Palliative Care Services

Palliative care is both a philosophy of care and an organized, highly structured system for delivering care. The goal of palliative care is to relieve suffering and improve the quality of life for patients with a life-threatening illness and their families.

Palliative care expands traditional disease-model medical treatments to include the goals of enhancing the quality of life for patients and family members, helping with decision-making and providing opportunities for personal growth. Palliative care can be provided along with life-prolonging treatment or as the main focus of care. Such care is appropriate to those suffering from cancer, heart conditions, liver failure, renal failure, Alzheimer’s disease, spinal cord injuries and a number of other conditions.

Memorial’s palliative care program provides a multidisciplinary Palliative Care Team made up of physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains to consult with patients and their families to develop an individualized plan of care.
